Marco Bons (1966) studeerde aan het Conservatorium van Utrecht bij Kenneth Montgomery en David Porcelein en gedurende de laatste twee jaar van deze studie ook bij Jurjen Hempel. Hij voltooide deze opleiding in 1994.

In eerste instantie violist speelde hij in diverse professionele orkesten, in het bijzonder het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest. Daarnaast vervulde hij de violistische rol in diverse kamermuziekensembles.

Marco Bons nam actief deel aan vele dirigenten-meesterklassen, onder andere bij Hiroyuki Iwaki, Sergiu Celibidache, Walter Gillessen, Tsung Yeh en Antoni Ros Marbà. In 1991 won hij het internationale dirigeerconcours te Hamm (Duitsland) en dirigeerde daarna onder andere het Westfälisches Sinfonie Orchester en in Tsjechië het Philharmonisch Orkest van Hradec Kralove.

Hij assisteerde diverse bekende dirigenten in verschillende operaproducties te Amsterdam en dirigeerde integrale opera’s van o.a. Purcell, Mozart, Ravel, Verdi, en hedendaagse componisten, zoals Ton de Leeuw, Udo Zimmermann, Jan Bus en Ilse van de Kastelen.

De laatste 3 jaar dirigeerde hij geensceneerde producties van Ravels L’Enfant et les Sortileges, Verdi’s Oberto, Attila en La Traviata.

Sinds 1999 is Marco Bons artistiek leider van de Rotterdamse Opera. In dezelfde functie dirigeert hij ook Kamerorkest Utrechtse Muziekacademie en Kamerorkest Continuo (Rotterdam). Continuo bestaat uit professionele musici en muziekstudenten, de andere ensembles hebben als basis een groepering van zeer goede amateurmusici en muziekstudenten.

Met deze uitstekend getrainde groepen en diverse professionele ensembles heeft hij een groot repertoire opgebouwd, variërend van vroeg-barokmuziek tot en met hedendaagse werken.

Marco Bons participated at many conductors' masterclasses given in the Netherlands with Hiroyuki Iwaki, Germany with Sergiu Celibidache and Walter Gillessen, the Czech Republic with Tsung Yeh and Spain with Antoni Ros Marbà. In 1991 he won the International Conducting Competition in Hamm (Germany) and conducted the Westfälisches Sinfonie Orchester. In the Czech republic he conducted the Hradec Kralove Philharmonic Orchestra.

He assisted in several opera productions in Amsterdam and conducted integral operas by Purcell, Mozart, Ravel, Verdi, and contemporain composers, like Ton de Leeuw, Udo Zimmermann, Jan Bus en Ilse van de Kastelen. The last two years he performed staged productions of Ravels L’Enfant et les Sortileges and Verdi’s Oberto, Attila and La Traviata.

Since 2000 Marco Bons is artistic director of the Rotterdamse Opera. He currently is as well conductor of the Chamber Orchestra Utrechtse Muziekacademie and Chamber Orchestra Continuo (Rotterdam). Chamber Orchestra Continuo consists of professional musicians and music students, the other groups are based on a setting of very good amateur players, -singers, and music students.

With these well-trained groups and other professional ensembles he built up a wide repertoire from early baroque to contemporain music.
